1955 Mercedes 190SL £165,000

The Mercedes 190SL was produced as a more reachable alternative to the 300SL. Sharing styling, engineering, detailing and the fully-independent suspension with the 300, it was an easier entry into high-end Mercedes luxury with the profits of open-top cruising. The engine was a 1900cc straight-four, two cylinders down from the 300SL, and produced 104hp, and the car was only available with a four-speed manual transmission. Where the 300SL was available in either fixed hardtop or roadster forms, the 190SL gave the options of soft-top or removable hardtop.

A third-passenger transverse seat was an option behind the front seats for some cars, and this model has had the option ticked, providing a quirky seat-belted way to ride along. The interior is presented in rare dark green leather, which is a stunning contrast to the black exterior colour. The car importantly comes with its original luggage and has a matching-numbers engine.

The car’s first owner kept the car for 27 years, before selling it to the next keeper who kept it for another 20! It has completed just 15,000km since its nut-and-bolt restoration in 1990 at Esdar Classic Cars in Germany. It has been serviced throughout its life by renowned specialists. The history file includes the original handbook (plus a photocopied version) and the car has a spare set of keys as well. Now is the chance to own a stunning piece of Mercedes history, in a rare colour combination and pristine condition.
